My Super Secret Trip to Wellington...

I decided that with my last few days in Auckland I wanted to spend one in Wellington. I just couldn’t stand knowing that I didn’t get to do the tour of Weta Workshop and I really wanted to see more of the city. We only had four hours there and we really only saw the museum. So I booked a bus ticket and went to Wellington. I was planning on taking a night bus there and back but all the night buses there were sold out. So I ended up spending an entire day on the bus and spending the night at a hostel. Then I got up and spent the day in Wellington. I went up to Weta Workshop and did the tour first thing. It was so cool! They don’t have actual tour guides, the artists just take time out of their day to do the tours. They’ve decorated part of the workshop with a bunch of props and models from the movies they’ve worked on. We got to see the whole process of making guns and swords for movies. I wish I could have taken pictures inside but because you are literally just walking through the workshop, they can’t have people taking pictures of top secret projects they are working on. So cool! They showed us how they use photoshop to make all of their story boards and concept art. The program allows you to make pictures and paintings that look hand drawn and painted with different mediums. That way if the director decides he wants it to look a little different they can just go and edit it instead of drawing or painting it all over again. After the tour I watched a video about the history of Weta which was also really cool. Then I went into the city to see some of the sights that I didn’t get a chance to see last time. I think my favorite thing was the theater they restored for the premier of Return of the King. It is a beautiful theater and I wanted to see a movie there but I didn’t want to see any of the movies they were showing. Once I’d seen everything I wanted to see I just went to the harbor and read my book for a while. I had a little bit of time before I wanted to eat dinner and catch the bus. It was so peaceful. I love being by the water! Then I ate at Nando’s for dinner (I also had it for dinner the night before…) and it was just as delicious as it always is! Then I caught a night bus home. I’m so glad I decided to go! It was so worth it!

The next day I decided to go see The Host because I loved the book and just couldn’t wait to see the movie. And I loved it! As far as I could remember, it followed the book really well! And it also helped that the main guy was super attractive! Haha, then we took our family to a rugby game! I love watching rugby but I’m still trying to figure out the rules so I don’t always understand what is going on but it’s still fun to watch. On Saturday we got up and went to the Otara Market one last time in search of the harem pants lady but she was not there again. Sad day :( It was raining so we just ran a few errands and then just hung out for the rest of the afternoon. Then Melony’s family took us all out to dinner at a Mongolian barbeque place that was really yum. We go over to their house for family dinner every Saturday night and since this was our last Saturday they wanted to take us out. It was so fun but the whole time all I could think about was how much I was going to miss our host family! We just love them all so much! Our last Sunday we went to Erika’s after church to watch a session of conference and eat pancakes and throw Elise a little bridal shower. We got her a really pretty nativity made from tapa cloth and flax. She had seen it at Pacifica and really wanted it so we got it for her! I also put together a really cute little book with pictures and notes from all of us. It turned out really cute! On Monday we spent one last day at the beach and on Tuesday we spent one last day in the city. We also ate Hell Pizza for the last time. That was so sad! Then Wednesday was the most heart breaking day. We went to visit our school one last time. My students had no idea! So we got out of the car and were walking up to the school and a couple of my girls saw me and yelled to everyone else, “Look! Look! It’s Miss Lyons!!!” Then I was surrounded by at least half of my class in a huge group hug. They all said they missed me so much and were so happy to see me! It was so cute! Word spread and pretty soon my whole class was back in the classroom talking to me and telling me all about what they had been doing in class since I had left. Mrs. Templeman was sick so I didn’t get to say goodbye to her though! But I spent the morning with my class and then had to go after morning tea. It was so sad :( I miss them all so much! Some of them have Facebook which is crazy because they are only 7 and 8 years old! But it has been nice to keep in touch. One of my boys was really worried about me after the bombing in Boston. He sent me a message asking if I had survived the bomb. It was so precious and it just made me think about how they are all going to worry every time something bad happens in the states. I really wish I could have brought them all back with me so I could be their teacher next year. I’m so glad I had the opportunity to go to New Zealand and learn from the children there. It was such a great experience and I wouldn’t change it for the world :)

Bacon Wrapped Kumara and Apple Crumble :)

So last weekend we went up to the Bay of Islands for Easter! We left early Friday morning and drove up to Paihia. We walked around the shops and looked at the city. It’s super cute and right on the water. Me, Sara, and Elise went looking for some dinner and found a really yummy Indian restaurant. I decided to go look at the bakery downstairs though because I really wanted a pie instead. When we got there they were getting ready to close so I got a pie for cheap and then they gave us three donuts for free!! They were delicious! Best night ever. We stayed in a hostel in Paihia that night and then we got up in the morning and went out to the Waitangi treaty grounds. We learned all about the history of the treaty and all of the disputes between the Maori and the English. It was really interesting. Apparently when they translated the treaty some of it was changed so the English version says something different from the Maori version. There is a lot of anger towards the treaty still even today! On Waitangi day a lot of the Maori people go to the treaty grounds and protest. We also got to watch another cultural show about different types of Maori dance. It was really cool. We also met up with Natalie again for the day! It was so good to see her again. After we saw the treaty grounds we took the ferry over to Russell. Our science professor invited us to stay with him for Easter weekend at his beach house. It was gorgeous! It was right on the beach and there were big windows everywhere so you could always see outside. It was really quiet too except for the waves. We fell asleep listening to the waves and it was so great! I wished we could stay there forever. It was just so beautiful. Ian made dinner for us that night and it was delicious! My favorite thing he made was bacon wrapped kumara. Kumara is like a sweet potato but way better and everything tastes good with bacon! That night we decided to sneak out and go to the beach! It was so funny because we thought we were so cool sneaking out! Most of us had never done that before and it’s not like it really mattered. Haha, it was so fun! The next day we went to church and then we came back and made dinner for Ian and his wife. It definitely didn’t turn out the way we had planned but I guess it was still food… Brooke and I made a very delicious apple crumble though! It was so good! Then we did a little devotional thing and called it a night. On Monday we drove all the way up to the tip of the north island. On the way up we stopped at a really good fish and chips place in this cute little harbor. We went to Cape Reinga and got to see where the Pacific Ocean meets the Tasman Sea. It causes all these waves because of the tides hitting each other and coming from all different directions. It’s so cool! We met up with Natalie for the day and she took us to a beautiful beach on the way home! It was a white sand beach and the water was so clear! It was definitely one of my favorite beaches until we saw the sting ray we were swimming with!! We kept thinking it was just our shadows in the water but then we saw it when a wave came and we all screamed and ran out. It was pretty funny. We stayed the night and then spent all day Tuesday driving home. It was a really cool trip but overall I think I like the south island better than the north island.

The Beach! So gorgeous :)

The cutest class ever!! :)

I can’t believe my practicum is over! I miss my kids sooooooooo much! My last day at school was so sad! Meloney dropped us off like she always does, but this time I could see my whole class in the window of our classroom watching and waiting for me. It was adorable. As soon as I got out of the car Marylynn ran over and gave me a hug. She was followed by the entire rest of my class. I had a swarm of students following me through the school and into the staff room. I put my lunch away and they all followed me inside the staff room and then back to our classroom. It was so cute! They all had so many things to tell me! Marylynn had a big poster/card she had made me and she gave me a Cadbury chocolate bunny! Hemi gave me these chocolate coconut ball things that were delicious! I got lots of little treats and cards from all of my students and it was so great :) We watched an Easter movie in the morning and during the middle block we did Easter activities. Then we had a shared lunch and we had so much fun together! After lunch we just kind of hung out until assembly. Then for assembly my reading group wanted to share their nature collages we did. So we talked about how we read an article about a class that made nature collages so we decided to make nature collages of our faces. Then me, Rachel, Andrea, Sasa (from my class) and four girls from Rachel’s class did the cup song from Pitch Perfect. It was so much fun! At the beginning of assembly the choir sang their school song and the national anthem (so cute!) and then in the middle they sang The Climb by Miley Cyrus! It was absolutely adorable! I love listening to them sing! Then they surprised us by doing a Haka for us!!!! They started with an action dance that the choir and the seniors did. Then the seniors did the Haka for us. It was amazing!!! It meant so much because we knew the boys up there doing it and they were just kids! It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. Me and Rachel have watched our video of it probably 10 times since then. We can’t get enough :) Then at the end of the day my kids just kept giving me hugs and not letting go. It was so cute and so sad! One of my boys even cried! They just kept asking me to take them back to America with me because I was the best teacher ever. I was so sad and I cried that night when I went to bed. Every time I think about my kids I tear up still! I just love them so much. Also, Malachi wasn’t there on my last day and that was sad. I’m so worried about him. I just want to take him home with me! I’m hoping to go visit my class again before I leave so hopefully he’ll be there then. This practicum was such a great experience for me. I learned so much about teaching and had a lot of practice teaching! I had such a diverse class that I was able to learn about a lot of different learning styles and it was just so much fun! I really wish I could stay at that school with those kids. It was such a fun environment. Some of the teachers had very different management skills than I do but they were all so nice and so much fun! I seriously can’t even express how much I love those students and that school :)
