Welcome to New Zealand!

Happy New Year! I made it to New Zealand in one piece! I left Sunday December 30th but didn’t get here until January 1st! It was so weird. I just skipped Monday which means I technically missed New Year’s Eve. Sad day L But I’m here and it is beautiful! The weather is amazing! I had a layover in Fiji and it was so hot and humid there. I got really worried that it was going to be like that the whole time I was in New Zealand and if you know me well, I don’t handle the heat very well… However, when we got here it was sunny, in the 70’s, and there was a nice cool ocean breeze. It also cooled off nicely when the sun went down so I’ll be able to sleep tonight! Yay! It’s been a rough day though. After I fly I always want to go straight home and take a shower. However, it took us like two hours to get out of the airport and find Erika and James. Then we drove another two hours up to Northland. It was a beautiful drive but all I could think about was how badly I wanted to shower and then cuddle up and read my book. (I saw some pink sheep! So cool! We drove by too fast for a picture though.) When we got to James’ house we were given a tent and told we would be sleeping in it. Again, if you know me well, you know I don’t camp. I’ve just never had a good experience camping. So I was a little less than thrilled about that but figured we would spend most of our time in the house and just sleep outside. That is not the case. We are basically living in our tent and apparently we have to buy our own food for this first week and still no one has said anything about getting to shower!! We got here a few days early because flights were cheaper so James was kind enough to let us stay at his home until the program starts on Saturday. However, I thought we would be staying in the house. Also there is no wifi here so we have to go down to the McDonald’s for any sort of communication. Super annoying. Technically we only have to deal with this for four days but still. Anyways, so we set up our tent (I was quite proud of myself!) and then they gave us 15 minutes to quickly freshen up and we were off to run errands (still no mention of showering…). We went to the McDonald’s and ate some food. I used the wifi to let my mom know I was alive and to post a few pictures to facebook. Then we went to the grocery store to find some food to keep us alive for the next couple of days. Finally, we came back, unloaded our food and I was told I could take a shower!! Hallelujah! That was the best shower I have ever taken! After my diet coke at McDonald’s and my shower, I feel a lot better. Tomorrow morning some of the girls are taking surfing lessons. I was a little too scared to sign up though so I’m going to just take pictures with my new zoom lens for my camera!
